The Wounaan tribe we visited in The Darien jungle, faces unique challenges due to its remote location and exposure to the elements. Temperatures were above 90 degrees every day we were there, along with 80 to 90 percent humidity.
To improve their living conditions and offer much-needed protection, we would like to initiate a Purpose Project to build a sun shelter for the Wounaan community.
We have several photographs and videos on our website that reflect the rich cultural heritage of this indigenous community that dates back centuries. By supporting the construction of a sun shelter, we would play an active role in preserving their way of life, customs, and traditions. Preserving their cultural identity empowers the Wounaan tribe to maintain their unique practices and pass them down to future generations.
The construction of an open thatch roof shelter would mitigate the harsh tropical climate of the Darien promoting better overall health among the Wounaan people. A shelter would also lead to expanded opportunities to display and sell their craft work which is activity that is central to their livelihoods as the Wounaan earn money by selling their crafts to visitors.
We have been extremely fortunate in that Canopy Family has agreed to partner with us on the realization of this project. Canopy Family has operated in Panama since 1999 and are renowned for their dedication and commitment to support
local communities. You can find additional information about them here https://canopytower.com/.
Canopy Family and the Wounaan community have estimated the cost of this project to be about $3,800.00. Because we will be using GoFundMe for our Purpose Projects, there are fees associated with the collections of donations so we will put the cost of this Purpose Project at $4,000.00.
Canopy Family has agreed to provide comprehensive reports throughout the duration of the project. They are also willing to monitor the use of the funds, oversee the project from the initial stages until its completion, and ensure transparency and regular updates on the progress made. They will also provide us with photos and videos that we can share on our website.
The Wounaan tribe has indicated that they would like to build a natural garden with native plants around the shelter to attract hummingbirds. They are very excited to see this dream become a reality. These are such a warm and friendly people. They let us know that we were always welcome there and could stay with them when we wanted to.
We know they would show any of our followers the same warmth and hospitality because that is their nature and culture. We would ask that you consider donating to this Purpose Project. Please do not think that your donation needs to be large. If enough of us give even a little, we can make make a true difference for this indigenous community. Thank you so much for your consideration of this very worthy Purpose Project.
Please stay tuned as we update you on our website with our progress. Thank you!!!
